Difficulty with the re-insertion of the small pin and how you were honest about that part of the process makes this a very relatable piece of work. Loved it! OH and this is probably what's wrong with my boat and now, after your demonstration, I think I got this!

Excellent video. I just did this job on an Volvo Penta MS4b gearbox after watching. Essentially it's exactly the same and easy if you take your time. Use Volvo genuine parts they are much better quality than the seals that failed.

Thanks. We would be in real trouble if that roll pin didn't come out so easily ! That selector paddle can be installed the wrong way. If so, the plate will not land and will show resistance. On the Volvo MS and MSB gearboxes, the paddle can drop into the gearbox and needs fished with a magnet. Be careful not to lose the spring or the paddle if there is a deep bilge below the motor !! I wonder what size the seal is on the MS and MSB gearboxes.

Hello, I came across this post as I'm dealing with and researching this same, shift shaft seal, issue now. I'm confident I will be able to replace this myself but am wondering if you could tell me, what are the symptoms of performance when this seal gets a leak? I've noticed lately, reverse is not engaging right away and now forward is acting the same. I have to give it a little throttle before it will engage. Also, intermittently, when I increase throttle to get on plane, the engine seems to bog and won't increase speed. After a couple of tries, I can get it to react properly. Are these different issues or could this happen due to a bad seal? Maybe I'm totally off base all together. Thanks for any input. I have twin 2001 volvo penta 5.7gsi motors.

For anyone doing this themselves...please consider the following; the direction of the clutch dog is critical. This guy does not show it, not sure he knows or not, or if he just forgot to show us. Its really essential however, and I just did this same procedure today on an 86 johnson 28. Same exact foot as this johnyrude. The clutch dog has a groove in it on one side, that side must face the forward drive gear. if you don't know which gear that is, well its the one in the back, or the one furthest away from the prop. This is key, because omc cut those dawg teeth at slightly diff angles in order to mesh properly. if you install it backwards, it may work, but it may also slip outta gear and eventually tear up the dog pawls. If you forget this, its easy enough to tell which way to install, just looking at the wear patterns and mating them to the corresponding wear patterns on the gears. Only one side of the pawl should have any wear. if it has never been reversed, and also assuming it was installed correct the first time, and not already slipping. Thats number one. And no offence to the creator, I actually really appreciate the video. Thank you for takin the time. Number 2, however, I have to tell you the other booboo I saw. And correct me, please if I'm wrong, but Idk how this foot is not gonna take water on, the way he sealed her up. That spaghetti string seals the outter most edges of the foot clam shell(skeg) right? Ok, good. However, the bolt holes run inside of that race for the spaghetti....So, they are not sealed at the top, under the head, so what is keeping H2O from seeping in past the bolt heads and into the foot? Nothing!!!! Also, using no sealant on the clamshell is so brave. Especially where the front hub meets the case. How can water not leak into there without some silly silicone?? Please do not forget these critical steps, because it will only lead to cool whip milkshake in the bottom foot, and nobody wants that.

Dang, these lowers look a lot easier to work on than the later models where you can’t separate the gear case. Don’t need a special tool to pull the propshaft housing or have to deal with that deeply recessed snap ring. Im sure that the later ones save mfgr money, have smaller hub diameter and save some water drag from screw holes though

I know with the VW V6, they use the Bravo2! Cummins 6BT are a great engine. You have to remember the torque that you have straight up with a diesel, as apposed to developing hp with a petrol V8.

Beautiful video. I have a 2007 Volvo SX-A outdrive and last time on the water it refused to go back into neutral. I had to trickle back into the dock and turn it off in gear. I figured shift cable was bad but I disconnected the linkage and I was able to shift smoothly at the control arm with it disconnected from the drive. I checked the service records and it looks like last year the Shift Shaft was sealed just like the video you have attached for the same issue. I was able to tap the shift mechanism lightly with a hammer and move it back in neutral for now but its very stiff. Would you recommend doing this repair a second time and seeing if it fixes the issue or would you guess there is a bigger problem like a cone clutch issue etc?

I recently replaced the oil but i was aware of the level side screw hole. and because of it I didnt put enogh oil in the unit. I took the boat out for a couple of hours. and notice noise coming the outdrive. it will come and go. so i decided to pull boat out and check level i was 30 oz low. now i have metal shaving at the magnet. please advice. I could pass on email to discuss the matter. I really appriciate your help. thank you Sir.
